Understanding the Use of Fluoride and Fluoride-Free Toothpastes

Taking care of your teeth and overall dental health is underrated and significant. If you have healthy and strong teeth, you can eat and digest food and provide your body with the necessary nutrition. Without your teeth, your digestion will become very difficult, and other health problems will become likely.

As a result, it will be necessary for you to take care of your teeth and preserve them. Preserving teeth and gums is generally done by using toothpaste. There are multiple kinds of toothpaste available. Some of them contain fluoride, while others do not. It will be helpful for you to understand the difference in use cases of each kind of toothpaste as it can decide the health of your teeth. You can also get teeth whitening bayside to improve your teeth’ appearance or health.

What is fluoride, and how does it affect our teeth?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in rocks, saltwater, or soil. Fluoride makes our teeth stronger. It also prevents cavities and tooth decay from forming in our mouth. Fluoride is added to toothpaste as the amount of fluoride in the environment is insufficient to make our teeth stronger and healthier.

Fluoride is added to toothpaste to increase and strengthen the enamel in our teeth. Enamel is a protective layer that protects the teeth from acids that lead to tooth decay. Fluoride strengthens the enamel and creates resistance against acids coming from sugary foods and drinks. Fluoride added to toothpaste is known as topical fluoride. Fluoride toothpaste is suitable for any age.

Why are fluoride-free toothpaste used?

It can be possible for you to consume an excessive amount of enamel. While fluoride can be beneficial, excess amounts can cause additional health problems. For instance, excessive fluoride can cause thyroid dysfunction. You would be surprised to know that it can also cause cancer.

Due to such reasons, many people may start considering fluoride-free toothpaste. Fluoride-free toothpaste is used to prevent additional health problems. However, fluoride-free toothpaste will not cause problems such as bad breath. On the contrary, it will keep your breath fresh and thorough brushing and flossing techniques will preserve your teeth. Unfortunately, fluoride-free toothpaste is not as effective as fluoride-based toothpaste.

If you start using fluoride-free toothpaste and observe your teeth are worsening in condition, you should switch to fluoride-based toothpaste. Otherwise, you can continue to use the latter without any concerns. Lastly, you can also consult your dentist about such factors. It would help if you asked them to suggest the most suitable toothpaste based on your dental condition.
