Retro Indie Aesthetic: All You Need To Know About

Retro Indie aesthetic is all around, isn’t it?  If you don’t grasp the concept or need some outfit inspiration, keep reading – we’ve got you covered!

In the last few years, approximately 500,000 different aesthetics have emerged, ranging from #cottagecore to #e-girl aesthetic. In this article, we’ll look at what retro indie aroma means and how it relates to many other aesthetics.

What exactly Retro indie aesthetic then?

Retro indie aesthetic means everything that’s not new (at least 15-20 years old) and not antique (it’s not a century old). That’s why we can talk about 90s retro and 80s retro as well.

Indie is a style that emphasises individuality and independence. As the aesthetic underwent a modern resurgence in 2019-2020 labelled Indie Kid, there are two camps of Indie. This style incorporated several independent music genres, including shoegaze. This can also apply to the indie film genre, as many films in the genre contribute to the original indie aesthetic.

The term “aesthetic” is derived from the Greek word “aisthetikos,” and it refers to sensitivity, sentience, and even perception.

Here’s the scoop on the most recent Indie Aesthetic:

There have always been ‘individuals’ who put their own spin on the latest trends since the dawn of pop culture.

Whether it’s the goths of the 1980s, the grunge kids of the 1990s, or the scene-kids of the 2000s, counterculture is a great indicator of cultural progression and a foreshadowing of what’s to come.

It is important to note that the aesthetic principles decided by subcultures, as well as the capital consumed by those subcultures, tend to be reactionary to the environment in which those aesthetics are created.

Indie-kids era: Retro indie aesthetic

Many people have their own ideas about what today’s Indie style should be named.

While the style is now known as “Indie-Kid Aesthetic,” the name is being disputed as more people and designers copy it.

What we do know is that the new Indie aesthetic emerged recently as a result of TikTok’s growing popularity (known as new-Tumblr).

However, in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, it was firmly established as a genuine aesthetic.

Let’s talk about music

Music released independently is not financially dependent on any of the four main labels (WMG, Sony BMG, EMI, and Universal). Indie rock, a form of rock music that emerged in the 1970s in the United States and the United Kingdom, is particularly popular among indie circles.

The Look

The 1970s were the era of macho men’s fashion, also known as peacock fashion, in which men dressed up to flaunt their masculinity. A classic 70s look included exaggerated bell bottom pants, a large belt, and a satin shirt. Another casual look was corduroy pants with a knit striped shirt.

Blue jeans became popular as casual wear in the 1970s. Denim was widely worn by people of all ages and was regarded as the ultimate American garment. Flared, bell bottom, wide leg, hip huggers, high waist, embroidered, embellished, studded – you name it! Denim was used for more than just pants: jean skirts, suits, vests, jackets, hats, and accessories were all popular. Designer jeans were viewed as a status symbol, and the more expensive they were, the more desirable they were! Designer names like Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvin Klein, Jordache, and Sasson were emblazoned across the backsides of men and women everywhere. A far cry from the dungarees of old! Glam or glitter rock introduced flamboyant, brightly coloured clothing in lux fabrics such as satins, velvets, and lurex to the scene. Embroidered with sequins, bedazzled, gemmed, and accessorised with feather boas! Nothing was too outlandish. The preferred footwear was super high stacked platform shoes or boots (Retro indie aesthetic).

David Bowie, as Ziggy Stardust, wore outrageously androgynous outfits both on and off the stage. The otherworldly costumes for the 1973 ‘Aladdin Sane’ tour were created by avant garde designer Kensai Yamamoto. Glitter rock stars of the time, including Kiss, Marc Bolan, The Sweet, and the New York Dolls, wore chiffon, spandex, and satin. Glitter makeup trends were seen on both men and women’s faces. Granny Takes a Trip and Biba, for example, had multiple locations in the United States and the United Kingdom that catered to both teenagers and rock stars.
